Circularity and sustainability of cartonboard
The carton packaging industry is characterised by sustainability and the importance of the circular economy as cellulose derivatives are renewable and easily recyclable resources. Paperboard fibres can be recycled more than 25 times and are further compostable at the end of their life cycle.
Physical properties, industrial technologies and graphic refinements make carton boxes an ideal option for packaging various products, including food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. They are able to guarantee the preservation and protection of the contents in the face of climatic conditions that can undergo moderate variations, such as humidity and temperature, and accidental impacts.
The sustainability of cartonboard is closely linked to the management of forests, which cover 40% of Europe’s 159 million hectares. European forests not only provide renewable raw materials, but are also growing: between 2005 and 2020 they expanded by more than 58,000 km², an increase of 30% since the 1950s. These forests, mainly in Sweden, Finland, Germany, France and Austria, are not only a source of fibre for cardboard, but also support local communities and provide opportunities for employment, recreation and renewable energy.
The European Union, with its Forestry Strategy 2030, plans to plant 3 billion new trees by the end of the decade. This plan is part of the ‘Fit for 55’ package and is supported by the pulp and paper industry.
Sustainable forest management is essential to ensure that forests maintain their biodiversity and productivity without causing damage to other ecosystems. Such management includes a series of regulations, laws and agreements at national and European level, together with forest certifications that ensure that more trees are planted than are harvested, thus guaranteeing the sustainability of resources in the long term.
